The nursing activities are involved in dental health education, primary and preventive health care, lead poisoning, prenatal care, sexually transmitted disease, tuberculosis, communicable disease, immunization, chronic disease and HIV/AIDS. Through the Children with Special Health Care Needs Program, approximately 150-170 children yearly are provided Early Intervention Services, Education, Transportation and Case Management. The Health Department seeks to educate the public about ways in which illnesses can be prevented, rather than to treat diseases once they occur. The educational services offered by the County are very broad in scope and are geared toward reducing risk for chronic diseases such as strokes, cancer, heart attacks and proper dental care. The Health Department monitors public water supplies, community sanitation and food establishments, temporary housing and recreational facilities, and toxic substances. The Environmental Health Staff performs nearly 4,000 yearly field visits involving over 850 regulated activities in Orleans County. Through health promotion and outreach, prevention of disease, and prolonging meaningful life activities, the County Health Department continues to play a role as a major health care service provider in the community.
