General Flu Vaccine Information

Please note the type of clinic scheduled on the links above - the information below may not relate to all clinics

Pneumococcal vaccine also available - only for persons 18 years and older.

 

If you do not have insurance that covers the vaccine at the clinics, the costs to adults are:

 

Flu Vaccine:  $30.00              Pneumonia Vaccine:  $50.00

 

Flu vaccine free to children age 6 months - 19 years

(through Federal Vaccines for Children)

What is Nasal Spray Vaccine?

  • It is also known as Live Attenuated (weakened)  Influenza Vaccine (LAIV)and may have the name of FluMist
  • It is sprayed into the nose
  • Only healthy persons who are age 2 years to 49 years of age and not pregnant may be able to get the nasal spray vaccine
  • What does healthy mean:
    • No long-term health problems, such as heart disease, lung disease (including asthma), kidney or liver disease, metabolic disease such as diabetes, anemia, and other blood disorders
    • Does not have a weakened immune system
    • Is not in close contact with anyone with a severely weakened immune system (requiring care in a protected environment, such as a bone marrow transplant unit)
    • Does not have certain muscle or nerve disorders (such as cerebal palsy) that can lead to breathing or swallowing problems
    • Is not a child / adolescent on long-term aspirin therapy
  • You should NOT get nasal or any flu vaccine if you have a severe (life-threatening) allergy to eggs
  • If you have already had either the seasonal flu nasal spray vaccine or the H1N1 nasal spray vaccine, you must wait at least 28 days before receiving the other flu nasal spray vaccine

 SEASONAL FLU VACCINE is recommended for the following:

  • Children age 6 to 59 months
  • Anyone over 6 months of age who has serious chronic medical conditions and/or immunosuppression
  • Children age 6 mos. to 18 yrs. who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy
  • Adults age 50 and older
  • Women who will be pregnant during flu season
  • Caregivers / household contacts / daycare providers for persons at high risk for complications from flu, such as:  persons age 50 and older, children age 0 to 59 months, persons with chronic medical conditions and/or weakened immune systems, and children on long-term aspirin therapy
  • Health-care personnel
  • Residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities
  • Anyone who wishes to avoid the flu

PNEUMONIA VACCINE is recommended for:  Anyone age 65 and older,  persons age 18-64 with serious chronic medical conditions and adults age 19-64 who smoke or have asthma. 

Pneumonia vaccine is available at the Health Department for persons 18 and older.

Listed below are very general rules about insurance coverage at the clinics:

 

PLEASE BRING ALL INSURANCE CARDS

 

MEDICAID will not cover these vaccines at the clinic.  If you have Preferred Care Gold, Blue Choice Senior or Encompass 65, those are your Medicare and we have to bill them, NOT Medicare.  Please bring your cards and inform the clinic.  Otherwise, Medicare (Part B ONLY) will pay.  If you have Senior Blue and Medicare Part B, only Medicare Part B will pay - bring both cards.

 

The following insurance plans, and no others, will cover one or both vaccines at the clinic for some age groups in some situations and/or specific plans:  Medicare Part B, Preferred Care, Excellus, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York, Independent Health Encompass 65 and Community Blue Family Health Plus, Community Care and Senior Care.
