The purpose of the Weights and Measures Department is to stand between the buyer and seller to see that the interests of both are safeguarded. The Director visits stores, markets, warehouses, wholesale houses, gas stations and other establishments to test and verify the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices. Using calibrated containers, fluid measuring devices such as service station gasoline pumps are tested. Standard weights are used to check for accuracy in meat, produce and platform scales. The Director seals these pumps, metering devices and scales when they are found to be accurate within the allowable tolerances. The Director responds to consumer complaints by investigation or testing as the occasion demands. The contents of pre-packaged foods are examined and checked to determine the accuracy of the labeling practices. The Petroleum Quality Program was initiated in 1992 to test the octane rating for gasoline and the cetane rating for diesel.
